Although the EQ2 is an equatorial mount, for beginners or terrestrial observation, it is often simpler
to use in
Alt-Az (azimuthal) mode, allowing for basic up-down and left-right movement.
Step-by-Step Setup
Adjust Latitude: Loosen the large latitude adjustment bolt at the base of the mount. Tilt the
head until the
latitude scale points exactly to 90 degrees. The counterweight shaft should now be perfectly
vertical.
Secure the Mount: Tighten the bolt firmly to lock the head in this vertical position.
Axis Functions: The RA Axis now acts as the horizontal (Azimuth) control, and the Dec Axis acts
as the
vertical (Altitude) control.
Fine Adjustment: Use the slow-motion control cables to track objects precisely.
Important Notes
Stability: The center of gravity changes; ensure the tripod remains stable.
Collision Check: Ensure the counterweight shaft does not hit the tripod legs.
Ergonomics: Rotate the telescope tube in the rings to keep the eyepiece in a comfortable
position.
